Dealing with
corns and calluses can be a really bothersome and sometimes even painful.
Although calluses are not dangerous it can cause discomfort, so it’s necessary
to get rid of it. And if you are a patient suffering from diabetes then corns
and calluses can turn out to be dangerous for you.
Calluses are
thick hardened layer of dead skin cells that form usually on your feet and
sometimes your hands due to excessive pressure or as a result of rubbing and
friction. There are several reasons like ill-fitted shoes, using of tools and
sometimes even some type of foot deformity can form calluses. Although there
are commercial over-the-counter callus removers available in the market, some
doctors recommend not using it due to the chances of getting skin burns if used
incorrectly. But there are tons of home
remedies that can help in dealing with the problem of calluses on your feet.
Baking Powder
One of the
easiest ways to treat calluses is by soaking your feet in warm water mixed with
baking soda. This will loosen up the callus and softens it; this will help in
healing the callus. You could either add couple of teaspoons of baking soda to
warm water or apply a paste of baking soda directly on the callus.
Vinegar
You might be
averse to the smell of vinegar but vinegar can do wonders when it comes to
healing calluses. Take some cotton and dip it in vinegar, apply this to the
callus and tape it up. Let the vinegar bandage work overnight so that the next
morning you will find that the callus has softened and can be scraped off with
a pumice stone. Using bread and vinegar is also a good remedy.
Castor Oil
Castor oil
is another great remedy for treating calluses. Dip a cotton ball in castor oil
and apply it directly on the callus while tapping it up with an adhesive tape.
Castor oil can stain sheets so make sure you wear some socks when you go to
bed. Avoid using castor oil on skin that is broken or bruised.
Chamomile Tea
Chamomile
Tea is known for its amazing properties. Drinking Chamomile tea can relieve
stress and helps in relaxing our mind. But it is also great for treating
calluses. Soak your feet in a warm water bath and add some chamomile tea bags
to it to treat calluses. It has a tendency to stain your feet but it can be
easily cleaned with soap and water. Chamomile tea is better than a lot of
callus removers out there.
Epsom salts
This is
another effective remedy to treat calluses. Soak your feet in warm water
mixed with some Epsom salts to soften the tough calluses. It also helps in
reducing pain and inflammation. Soaking your feet for about 20 minutes can help
in healing the calluses. Epsom salts can be easily found in any drugstore.
There are other things you need to be careful
about when dealing with calluses. Make sure that your skin doesn’t rub against
the shoe and try wearing comfortable shoes and socks to deal with the friction.
